Acclimatization
I have often been asked if training should cease if the temperature goes above 90° or if the wet bulb temperature that measures temperature and humidity goes above 85 (even though I have never seen a wet bulb).
My answer is maybe.
Acclimatization is the process in which an individual organism adjusts to a change in environment. This includes temperature, altitude, humidity and daylight.
Acclimatization is a concern when there is a sudden change in the environment concerning all individuals and especially athletes. With the erratic swing in temperature and humidity during the month of May we can see a range between 40to triple digits. With this sudden change it is common to experience heat related injuries. It takes approximately two weeks of consistent training in warm weather, higher humidity and higher altitude to acclimate.
When the weather changes we need to adjust the intensity, frequency, time of day of the workouts and allow for frequent water breaks. Make sure that you drink NOT sip.
Do not take a sudden hot day lightly, poor judgment could be catastrophic.
